Alyssa Brandone

21 years ago, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. I was devastated, as was my family. One day I was living the life of a normal 11-year-old, and the next, I was confined to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. It’s a reminder of how quickly life can change.

I spent six months in complete isolation and underwent four rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, each bringing numerous and painful side effects. But I knew I had to stay strong—stay positive and hopeful that my life would return to normal and that I would beat my cancer.

To keep my spirit alive, my brother Joey Brandone challenged me: if I beat my cancer, he would make an elite hockey team. Together, we both won that challenge.

Today, I celebrate being in complete remission. I look back on my treatment not only as an obstacle but as a time when the support of others made all the difference. Visits, calls, and simply being present—they meant the world to me, and I cannot thank my family, friends, and caregivers enough.

Now, we can all do our part to give back by supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Every donation helps accelerate blood cancer cures and provides vital support to those currently in treatment.

There is no greater feeling than transforming a devastating experience into one of hope and inspiration.
